Medical hypnosis
Medical hypnosis is a psychological method that takes a person into a state of intense relaxation and concentration. It is an altered state of consciousness that allows access to subconscious content, and in this state the hypnotized person is susceptible to suggestions that allow them to transform their personality.
A person experiences a trance state as a deep state of relaxation that relaxes them internally. Sometimes people are afraid that they will do something in this state that they will later regret. But this fear is unnecessary – the hypnotized person, by focusing their attention on the therapist's voice, is actually guiding and controlling their trance state. If the tension becomes too great, they can open their eyes and thus break the trance state.
Research has shown that the brain of a hypnotized person is similar to the brain of a person in a meditative state. In both cases, the hypnotized person is in a state of internal attention and observation of their own thoughts. However, in a trance state, the individual maintains attention to their own thoughts and emotions while following suggestions, which allows them to experience themselves in a new way.
Medical hypnosis is performed by a qualified professional who is a psychologist or doctor by education and has successfully completed all medical hypnosis courses to obtain the title of medical hypnosis therapist from the Slovenian Medical Hypnosis Society.
Frequently asked questions about medical hypnosis:
- Is it possible to hypnotize everyone?
People are suggestible/hypnotizable in different ways. Suggestibility is the predisposition of an individual to follow the voice of a hypnotherapist and surrender to a state of trance. Suggestibility can be trained through meditation, mindfulness exercises, and through a positive experience of hypnosis. - How many sessions do I need for hypnosis to be effective?
The number of sessions depends on the complexity of the problem and the client's suggestibility. And of course, partly on the therapist's competence. In general, at least 3-5 visits are recommended for each problem. I always encourage the client to record the hypnosis and listen to it at home. This way, they can contribute to the greater effectiveness of hypnosis. When purchasing a hypnosis package, I send the client a meditation before the first visit, which prepares them for the first hypnosis session. - I'm afraid of hypnosis. What now?
Fear of hypnosis is completely normal. For decades, the media and film industry have portrayed hypnosis in a somewhat mysterious, inaccurate way, which is why people have quite a few misconceptions about hypnosis. Of course, there are certain risks, but they are most often related to the purpose of using hypnosis (e.g. suggestions in advertisements). You can reduce or even eliminate the risks by choosing a qualified therapist who is a psychologist (or doctor, depending on the problem). Medical hypnosis differs from other types of hypnosis in that it is used to relieve mental, physical and chronic problems. - When is hypnosis not recommended?
Hypnosis can help with many problems of psychological and, in some cases, physical origin. However, it is not recommended for clients diagnosed with schizophrenia. - Can I test my suggestibility and see how hypnosis would work for me before I decide to purchase a package of sessions?
Of course. It's best to call for a free consultation, describe your problems, and I'll advise you on which hypnosis would be best for you.
The usefulness of medical hypnosis
Medical hypnosis is becoming an increasingly popular method for treatment purposes. In an altered state, a person can process their emotions, reactions, and change their mental representations. They gain a more objective view of their problems, while in a trance state they have greater control over their physical and emotional responses.
Medical hypnosis is most often used to treat anxiety, specific phobias (e.g. phobia of flying), and is also very effective as a support in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as in the treatment of pain. More and more individuals are choosing it as a supportive therapy in the treatment of depression, as well as in smoking cessation, eating disorders, and for individuals who are extremely low in self-confidence and would like to strengthen it.
Hypnosis is also being used by athletes who want to improve their sports results and perceptions of their own performance. More and more research shows that hypnosis is not only an effective method for the independent treatment of mental problems, but its effects are even stronger when the client combines the method of medical hypnosis with one of the psychotherapeutic modalities.
Hypnosis is effective in treating insomnia, headaches and migraines, as well as increasing motivation for performance. It is used in speech disorders, in the treatment of psychosomatic diseases (asthma, stomach ulcers, allergies, neurodermatitis, chronic inflammation of the colon) and in forensics (e.g. to determine specific circumstances, details of events).
Medical hypnosis is also effective in younger populations. Teenagers most often choose it to overcome the fear of test anxiety, and in children it is most often used to help with bedwetting (enuresis), trichotillomania, and speech disorders, such as stuttering.
Medical hypnosis to boost self-confidence
Medical hypnosis for self-confidence building restores vitality, self-confidence and improves an individual's self-image. Self-image represents one's own ideas about oneself. It affects all aspects of our lives - the quality of our relationships, success at work, even our financial situation.
What results can I expect and how quickly?
Hypnosis to boost self-confidence lasts 20-30 minutes, and 3-5 sessions are recommended. Changes can be felt after the first session. Session progress: After entering a trance state, the client receives suggestions to strengthen the ego. With the help of suggestions, his motivation, productive attitude, as well as his image and feelings about himself are strengthened. The individual begins to perceive himself as capable, intelligent, successful and attractive. He feels how his goals become achievable. Suddenly, a path opens before him, leading him to new opportunities. He sees himself weaving strong relationships with people important to him. He achieves results that were previously unattainable for him. He finally sets boundaries and stands up for himself both at home and at work. He easily says “no” and takes time for himself.
***Mateja's case:
Mateja came to her first hypnosis session because of her low self-confidence. She was experiencing mobbing at work and felt that she was approaching a state of burnout. At the time she contacted me, she was on sick leave. She immediately told me that she knew the field of psychology well, as she had attended numerous psychotherapies for years. As a counselor at a kindergarten, she faces numerous challenges every day, which she solves relatively successfully. However, everything got complicated because of a colleague and principal, who could no longer say no to them. Every day she had more work to do, but when physical problems arose, she simply couldn't take it anymore. She dropped everything and went on sick leave. Her situation at home was not rosy either. Her partner lived in another city and they rarely saw each other. She had neither the time nor the energy for a child. When she came to me, she was completely desperate. She didn't quite believe that I could really help her, but something convinced her to try anyway.
Due to the great distance from my office in Ljubljana, we arranged the first session via Zoom (a personal visit is preferred, but it is also possible to arrange it differently). At the first session, we performed ego-strengthening hypnosis, which deeply relaxed her. After a long time, she felt her body again and truly connected with it. She was in a trance for almost half an hour. When she woke up, she told me that feelings of personal power that she had not known for a long time had reawakened in her – as if they were sleeping somewhere deep inside her, but now they had awakened. Within a month, we conducted three more sessions, and each subsequent one strengthened the feelings of power even more. At the last meeting, she told me that she had finally set boundaries for her partner and stood up for herself. She put him in front of the fact that they would either move in together or break up, and his partner decided on the first option. Her relationship with her child had improved greatly, as had his success in school. Relationships at work were also a bit easier, there was no longer a need for sick leave.
In just four weeks, Mateja radically changed her life. She felt what her mission was and which aspects of herself were not fully expressed. She stood up for herself more firmly and formed more mature relationships. At the last meeting, she said: “I know that this is just the beginning. My life is in my hands and there is still a lot of room for progress. But with your help, I have taken decisive steps in the right direction. Hypnosis helped me feel the strength within myself and get rid of the shackles that held me in place. I am extremely grateful.”

How does medical hypnosis work on children?
With children, medical hypnosis is performed in an adapted and child-friendly way. Through the use of play, imagination and visualization, the therapist establishes a hypnotic state in which the child becomes more relaxed and focused. In this state, the therapist can communicate with the child's subconscious and transform negative patterns, strengthen self-confidence, promote a sense of security and facilitate healing.
The use of medical hypnosis in children can be beneficial in:

Alternative use of hypnosis – exploring past lives
Past life exploration is an approach that stems from the belief that our soul passes through multiple incarnations and that our current experiences are connected to events and experiences from past lives. Using a hypnotic state, a therapist can guide the client through an experience where memories of past lives can be released, along with emotional and energetic blockages.
The following steps are used when researching past lives with hypnosis:
-
Relaxation: The therapist helps the client achieve a state of deep relaxation and calm, which facilitates access to subconscious memories.
-
Guided Experiential Therapy: The therapist guides the client through visualizations and suggestions that encourage recollection and exploration of past lives. This includes describing the environment, people, events, and emotional experiences the client experiences while in a hypnotic state.
-
Understanding and Integration: After completing the past life exploration experience, the therapist helps the client understand and interpret these memories. The goal is to gain insight into patterns, lessons, and connections that the client can use for their growth and development in the present life.
Exploring past lives through hypnosis can be an interesting experience that can bring a deeper understanding of yourself, your relationships, and life challenges. However, it is important to understand that this approach is based on the beliefs and experiences of the individual and is not scientifically proven. Everyone has their own unique experience exploring past lives and can gain personal growth and insights.
If you are interested in exploring past lives through hypnosis or would like to speak with a therapist who practices this method, I invite you to contact me. Together we will create a safe and supportive environment for your past life exploration and help you with your personal development.
